Cluster de Aeronáutica y Espacio (Hegan): Congress to take flight: world aerospace industry to meet in Bilbao for annual beanfeast

“All the world’s major aerospace manufacturers use some component made in the Basque Country.” This statement served as a rallying cry at the presentation of the Aerotrends 2004 congress, which, on 8 and 9 November, will be bringing together more than 150 entrepreneurs and businessmen from an industry that is making its presence increasingly felt in the Basque regional economy.

At the presentation, Martín Fernández, deputy director of Basque aerospace cluster HEGAN, declared that “participants will have the perfect opportunity to learn much more about the keys to the industry’s future development, basically because all the big aerospace names are coming, as are a number of top-level international speakers.”

Férnandez stressed the remarkable level of ongoing development of the aerospace industry in the Basque Country, pointing out that it now accounted for between 20 per cent and 25 per cent of the industry in Spain as a whole. Basque businesses in the industry registered total turnover last year of 670 million euros, up 10 per cent over the previous year’s figure. The regional industry employs 4,200 people and accounts for 3 per cent of the GDP, the same as all tourist activity in the area.
