Powers of retailing: Basque distribution group in world top 100

Global Powers of Retailing, a report prepared and issued jointly by Deloitte and Stores magazine, identifies Spain's four major distribution groups, El Corte Inglés, Mercadona, Inditex and the Eroski group, as being in the world's leading 100 firms in the industry.

Based on the sales of the 250 biggest firms in the world last year, the report looks at the way industry developed over the last twelve months and the prospects and major trends for 2009.

Both El Corte Inglés and Mercadona consolidated their position amongst the 50 largest firms in the sector, coming in 40th and 46th, respectively. Inditex and Eroski made some major advances in the 2008 report, with Amancio Ortega's group leaping from 74th to 65th this year, while the Basque-based distribution chain went up from 105 to 90.

Furthermore, El Corte Inglés is third in the world as multi-product distributors, behind Americans Target and Sears and ahead of British group Marks & Spencer.

Once again US group Wal-Mart leads the pack, followed by Carrefour. Immediately behind WM are Tesco and Metro, both of which step up a place bypassing Home Depot, which drops from third to fifth.
